Code of Conduct
Sunday Afternoons is committed to promoting a fair and safe working environment for workers making our products. The Sunday Afternoons Code of Conduct supports this commitment by outlining our Supplier requirements. The standards in this Code, based on internationally accepted fair labor principles and practices and the International Labor Organization standards, represent a minimum requirement for Suppliers. Sunday Afternoons monitors compliance with the Code and promotes a model of continuous improvement for all components of the Code.
Business Conduct and Ethics
Operate with integrity and comply with all applicable laws and regulations in all locations where business is conducted. Follow internationally-accepted practices related to anti-corruption, anti-bribery, and antitrust, and adopt ethical practices to ensure the protection of human rights, workers’ rights, operational safety, the environment, and the surrounding community.
Transparency
Exercise open and forthright communication about business practices. Maintain and provide, upon request to 3rd party auditors, accurate and complete payroll and employee records and disclosure of facility locations. Provide access to facilities for auditing and inspection purposes.
Nondiscrimination, Violence or Harassment
Comply with all applicable laws and regulations concerning nondiscrimination with an emphasis on treatment that includes respect and dignity. Ensure workers are not subject to any form of discrimination in employment based on gender, race, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, political opinion, social group or ethnic origin, or any other personal characteristic. Employment decisions, including but not limited to hiring, compensation, advancement, discipline, termination, or retirement, are to be made on the basis of qualification and ability. Ensure workers are not subject to any form of violence, harassment, abuse or degrading treatment including threats.
Harassment or Abuse
Comply with all applicable laws and regulations concerning workplace harassment or abuse. Treat workers with dignity and respect. Physical, psychological, verbal, sexual, and other forms of harassment, abuse, or disciplinary tactics, or threat thereof, are prohibited.
Forced Labor or Human Trafficking
Comply with all applicable laws and regulations concerning forced labor and human trafficking. Not engage in, or through business partners, be complicit to the use of forced labor, indentured labor, bonded labor, prison labor, human trafficking or any other form of compulsory labor or practice, such as forced overtime, document or wage withholding, or excess employment fees, which intend to limit workers’ freedom of employment.
Child Labor
Comply with all applicable laws and regulations on child labor and ensure no person younger than 16 years of age (or younger than the age for completing the compulsory education in the location of the factory, if such age is older than 16 years) works in any facilities. Comply with all regulations for young workers and ensure workers younger than 18 do not engage in hazardous work.
Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining
Recognize and respect the right of workers to freely associate and collectively bargain, following applicable laws and regulations. When freedom of association and collective bargaining is restricted under local or national law, Suppliers allow workers to raise any job-related grievances without penalty or threat of reprisal.
Hours of Work
Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations regarding hours of work, workday breaks, time off, public holidays, and leave. Regular and overtime hours will not exceed 60 hours per week on a regularly scheduled basis (except under exceptional, unforeseen circumstances). Workers are entitled to one day off for every seven days worked.
Compensation
Meet all applicable laws and regulations for wages and benefits in the country in which business is conducted, or the local industry standard or collective agreement, whichever is higher. Where overtime is required, workers must be compensated appropriately according to the law, and if not required by law, overtime will be at least equal to the hourly rate. Facilities must maintain available and accurate payroll documents.
Health and Safety
Provide workers with a safe and healthy work environment in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Obtain all required permits and ensure workers are reasonably protected from accident or injury in the facility. The same standards apply to residential facilities, where they are offered. Ensure workers receive training and refresher courses on health and safety policies and procedures. This includes but is not limited to:
- Emergency situations: Legal and safe evacuation plans, adequate fire safety precautions including fire alarms, fire extinguishers, fire drills, and a sufficient number of workers trained in firefighting, emergency lighting, and the maintenance of clear walkways and exits.
- Safety equipment and first aid: Necessary, abundant, and easily available safety and first aid equipment, including personal protective gear. A sufficient number of workers must be trained in first aid.
- Chemical management: Follow applicable laws and regulations for chemical labelling, storing, handling, use, and disposal to ensure worker safety.
- Facility operations: Ensure all heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, lighting, noise, and plumbing systems are installed correctly and conform to legal standards. Ensure machine safety and maintenance to prevent undue harm to workers.
- Sanitation: Ensure worker access to adequate sanitation, including but not limited to safe drinking water and clean and sanitary restrooms, which workers may access at their discretion.
Environment
As the industry continues to look at ways to reduce and offset our footprint, we ask our vendors and mills to do the same. Act in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and international environmental standards. Seek to minimize adverse effects of operations on human health and the environment, such as energy and greenhouse gas emissions, air emissions, water, hazardous chemicals, and waste.
Worker-Management Communication and Community
Engage with workers on the standards in this Code; provide the Code to workers in the local language(s) in a visible location and offer training and refresher courses on the standards. Provide a clear grievance mechanisms system for workers to communicate with management in a confidential manner. Additionally, Suppliers are encouraged to engage with the local community in projects that improve the social well-being of workers and their families.
